The Gunners are seeking to keep their perfect start to 2019 going when they make the short trip to the London Stadium

Arsenal have made an emphatic start to 2019 and will seek to keep it going when they face West Ham in Premier League action on Saturday.

Unai Emery’s side were dealt a stark reminder of how far behind the very elite they remain as they lost 5-1 to Liverpool in December but have bounced back in impressive form, recording thumping three-goal wins over Fulham and Blackpool.

They remain very much in the hunt of the Champions League, and with Chelsea wobbling will aim to increase the pressure on their neighbours by winning against the Hammers.Manuel Pellegrini’s side are up to 10th in the standings after a slow start to the season but have won only one of their last four.

Match Preview

Mesut Ozil Arsenal 2018

Departures are currently on the agenda for both Arsenal and West Ham as they prepare for their second Premier League outings of 2019.

Aaron Ramsey is set to depart the Gunners for Juventus on a Bosman deal in the summer, much to the chagrin of Martin Keown, who branded their inactivity regarding the Welshman “astonishing”.

“If Arsenal are admitting they are only able to sign loan players, then it is staggering that they are happy to let one of their prized assets leave for nothing,” he told the Daily Mail.

“Ramsey has conducted himself with great dignity this season but it is astonishing that Arsenal, a powerhouse in the English game, could not put together a package to keep him.”

Meanwhile, the Hammers are facing a fight to retain the services of Marko Arnautovic, their leading marksman and a striker who has been linked with a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League.

Manuel Pellegrini claims there is “no news” in the wake of speculation of a £35m ($45m) bid and believes the Austria international will remain a threat on Saturday.

“He will have his head in the right place for the game against Arsenal,” the Chilean stated before admitting: “Marko is a player of our team, players of his quality will be wanted by other clubs. I want to keep him of course, but you never know what might happen in the future.”

If the Hammers are to cause an upset on Saturday, as they have already done against Manchester United at home this season, they will have to reverse a nasty recent trend against their London rivals.

Arsenal have won five of the last six meetings between the clubs, with the exception a 0-0 draw in the Premier League last season.

Arnautovic gave West Ham the lead when they went to the Emirates earlier this season, but a Nacho Monreal equaliser and a stoppage-time striker from Danny Welbeck sandwiched an Issa Diop own goal as the Gunners ran out 3-1 winners.

Nasri: I have nothing but love for Arsenal!

The West Ham midfielder insists he only had bad things to say about the Gunners in the past in retaliation to his "treatment from the fans"

Samir Nasri has revealed that he has "nothing but love" for former club Arsenal despite his acrimonious exit to join Manchester City back in 2011.

The midfielder opted to make the move to the Gunners' Premier League rivals for £24 million ($34m), delivering a parting shot at the club's supporters as he suggested City's fans were more passionate.

The Frenchman spent three years at Arsenal, making a total of 125 appearances, and he insists that, as he prepares to face the Gunners for West Ham on Saturday, he still holds his former club in high regard.

He told Sky Sports: "I enjoyed it [his time at Arsenal] a lot because I had a manager there that really believed in me. It was like a second dad.

"When I look at it I'm happy about my three years there but disappointed at the same time because we had so much quality. It's just a shame that we didn't win any silverware with the players and the team we had, but I had good memories.

"Arsene Wenger made me have this mentality to score goals and to believe in my qualities. From the top of my head, there was this game against Fulham where I scored two really nice goals. We won 2-1 and at the end of this game we were top of the league.

"The goal against Porto, the goal against Tottenham in the derby. My final season was the season when I scored a lot of goals and it was good."

"I'm looking forward to it [facing Arsenal] because it will hopefully be my first game back in the Premier League. I was in the squad against Brighton but I stayed on the bench so it would be nice.

Samir Nasri Arsenal Man City

"As well, in the past maybe we had some words with the Arsenal fans but like I said, there is nothing but love for the club because I spent three wonderful years there.

"Before I used to say things about Arsenal because I was hurt by the treatment from the fans but there is nothing but love for Arsenal."

Nasri is preparing to make his first appearance in the Premier League since 2016, having left City to join Sevilla on loan before completing a permanent move to Turkish side Antalyaspor in 2017.

He was, however, banned from football for 18 months for breaching anti-doping rules, with Nasri having since signed for West Ham following the conclusion of his suspension.

And the 31-year-old insists that he is still as good as he used to be, claiming that he's only focused on taking his second chance in football. He added: "One-hundred per cent [Nasri's as good as he used to be]. If you don't believe in yourself, who's going to do it for you?

"I'm a guy who is confident and football is like riding a bike, forget about it. Once you know how to do it you will always do it. The only thing is to get my fitness back and that's it, but my mindset is I want to prove something to myself.

"Prove that I'm back and I only lost one year of my career. I don't want to have any regrets about it. I want to be able to say I was blessed, I was lucky to have a second chance and I did take it."

Unai Emery’s gamble on Mesut Ozil backfires as uninspiring Arsenal falter against West Ham Sean KearnsSaturday 12 Jan 2019 2:30 pm Share this article via facebookShare this article via twitterShare this article via messenger Mesut Ozil hasn’t featured since Boxing Day (Picture: Getty) Questioned before kick-off at to why Mesut Ozil was nowhere to be seen in Arsenal’s 18-man squad to play West Ham, Unai Emery could easily have resorted to a hackneyed list of excuses that we’ve grown accustomed to hearing since the German’s move to the Emirates. Instead, the Spaniard made it clear that the 30-year-old was not even worthy of a place on Arsenal’s bench because ‘the players here are better for the match today.’ From a tactical perspective, Ozil’s questionable work-rate infuriates Emery and he feels the Gunners’ leaky defence can ill-afford such luxury in front of it, especially given their injury issues. But make no mistake that a grander game is at play here. Ozil became the club’s highest earner ever when he signed a new deal in 2018 and he used Alexis Sanchez’s move to Manchester United as leverage against the Gunners, who couldn’t be seen to lose their two prized assets in such a short space of time. Emery is risking short-term pain by exiling Mesut Ozil (Picture: Getty) The contract gave Ozil unprecedented power but the club’s decision to withdraw a lucrative offer to Aaron Ramsey – a move orchestrated by Emery – signalled a change in direction for the club. That’s why Emery’s fooling no-one by claiming Ozil’s absence is for tactical reasons. Few players in Premier League history have bore as much criticism as Ozil and many of Emery’s concerns are legitimate. In Ozil’s last appearance for the Gunners in a 1-1 draw on Boxing Day at Brighton, he was substituted at half-time despite looking dangerous in the final third. Mesut Ozil was taken off at half time on his last Arsenal appearance (Picture: Getty) However, Emery was furious with the German’s refusal to track Jurgen Locadia from an attacking corner and the Dutchman was nearly 50 yards ahead of Ozil when he tapped home to equalise shortly before the interval. But such a gamble to ostracise Ozil requires the rest of the team to step-up in his absence and, if anything, the playmaker’s stock has risen as his team-mates have struggled without him in recent weeks. The Gunners looked short of ideas against the Hammers and spent much of the game sitting off Manuel Pellegrini’s men, hoping to hit them on the counter.  Emery set his side up in a 5-3-2 formation without the ball, moving into a 3-5-2 in possession. Arsenal are three points off fourth having played a game more than Chelsea (Picture: Gettty) The system allows for two-deep lying midfielders and for wing-backs to get forward but it forces the Gunners to relinquish control, instead allowing their opposition to grow in confidence. Emery would ideally like to play in a 4-2-3-1 formation, which would play into Ozil’s strengths but even then it’s unlikely that the German would be reintroduced to the fold. Regardless, an Arsenal side boasting the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette should be causing West Ham more trouble but Declan Rice’s goal shortly after half-time was all the Hammers deserved. Pellegrini’s side had already come close through the exciting Felipe Anderson and Rice headed narrowly wide before scoring his first goal for the club. Ozil’s stock has risen during his exile (Picture: Getty) Ironically, it wasn’t until Arsenal introduced Juventus-bound Aaron Ramsey that they clicked into some form of gear. The Welshman was set to sign a new deal at the club before Emery instructed his board to withdraw the offer, believing instead that he can use the budget more wisely elsewhere. The public nature of that decision makes it difficult not to conclude that the same is happening with Ozil but Emery has had to fully freeze him out because of the club’s decision to hand him a long-term deal when they knew Arsene Wenger was leaving at the end of last season. The defeat leaves Arsenal three points off of Chelsea in fourth, having played a game more than the Blues. The Gunners welcome Maurizio Sarri’s side to the Emirates next week and defeat would leave them big outsiders to qualify for the Champions League. Emery has appeared happy to experience short-term pain by exiling Ozil but the true test will come in the coming weeks to see if he reintroduces him. For now, the power is back in Ozil’s hands.

#2 Groveland Four pardoned decades after false rape claim

CBS Evening News with Jeff Glor

It took 70 years for justice to prevail. Florida's governor and clemency board Friday posthumously pardoned the so-called "Groveland Four," four African American men who were falsely accused of...

Groveland Four: Florida pardons black men wrongly convicted of raping white teenager in 1949

‘He was accused, put in jail and tortured for something he didn’t do,’ said one of men’s daughters

Four black men who were wrongly convicted of raping a white teenager almost 70 years ago have received posthumous pardons.

Florida’s new governor and the state’s cabinet voted unanimously to pardon the “Groveland Four” following an hour-long meeting on Friday.

The last of the men died in 2012 but their relatives appealed their innocence on Friday, in a case now seen as historical racial injustice.

The case of Charles Greenlee, Walter Irvin, Samuel Shepherd and Ernest Thomas was brought back into the public eye following the publication of historian Gilbert King’s Pulitzer prize-winning book Devil in the Grove in 2013.

The men’s ordeal began in Lake County in 1949, when a 17-year-old girl claimed she had been raped.

Three of the men were arrested and severely beaten, while Ernest Thomas fled.

A gang of about 1,000 men hunted down Thomas and shot him 400 times after finding him sleeping under a tree.

Charles Greenlee, Walter Irvin and Samuel Shepherd were convicted by an all-white jury.

Other evidence that could have exonerated them – such as a doctor’s conclusion that the teen probably wasn’t raped – was withheld at their trial.

Mr Greenlee was sentenced to life, and Mr Irvin and Mr Shepherd to death.

Thurgood Marshall, later the first African-American justice on the US Supreme Court, took up Mr Irvin’s and Mr Shepherd’s appeals, and in 1951 new trials were ordered.

But just before the trials began, Lake County sheriff Willis McCall shot the pair, claiming the handcuffed men tried to escape as he transferred them from prison to a jail.

Mr Shepherd died, while Mr Irvin, who was shot in the neck, survived despite an ambulance refusing to take him to hospital because he was black.

Mr Irvin was again convicted, even though a former FBI agent testified that prosecutors manufactured evidence against him.

Charges were never brought against any of the white law enforcement officers or prosecutors who handled the cases.

Mr Irvin was eventually paroled in 1968 and found dead in his car while returning to Lake County for a funeral a year later.

Mr Greenlee was paroled in 1960 and died in 2012.

His daughter, Carol Greenlee, told Florida governor Ron DeSantis and the cabinet that there was overwhelming evidence showing her father was innocent.

“He was accused, put in jail and tortured for something he didn’t do,” she said.

The woman who said she was raped sat in a wheelchair at the meeting and insisted “I’m not no liar”.

She claims she was dragged from a car, had a gun put to her head and was told not to scream or the men would “blow your brains out”.

The pardons came almost two years after the state house and senate voted to formally apologise to relatives of the Groveland Four and to ask then-governor Rick Scott to pardon the men.

Mr Scott, now a US senator, never took action. Mr DeSantis replaced him as governor on Tuesday and made the pardons a priority.

DeSantis, cabinet pardon the ‘Groveland Four’

Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state Cabinet gave long-sought pardons Friday to members of the “Groveland Four” in one of the most-notorious cases from Florida’s Jim Crow era.

The unanimous vote was intended to bring peace to the families of the four African-American men and was urged by leaders of the community where a series of injustices happened seven decades ago.

The vote by DeSantis and the Cabinet, sitting as the state clemency board, came amid emotional and accusatory testimony from descendants of the African-American men accused in 1949 of raping a white woman in Lake County and the woman herself who remained emphatically opposed to the pardons.

Attorney General Ashley Moody said the action wasn’t about the victim but “righting a wrong of 70 years ago.”

“By anyone’s judgment of this case, due process and the norms that we have that protect liberties of people now in today’s law and in our justice system were not afforded to these defendants,” Moody said.

Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, who restarted the push for the pardons in December, said she was proud of her colleagues and that the vote “marks progress and resolution on an undeniable injustice of the past.” Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis also voted for the pardons.

The posthumous pardons were approved for Earnest Thomas, Samuel Shepherd, Charles Greenlee and Walter Irvin.

Thomas was killed by a posse in Madison County after the rape accusation. The three other men were beaten to coerce confessions before they were convicted by an all-white jury.

Greenlee, at 16, was given a life sentence. Shepherd and Irvin, both U.S. Army veterans, were sentenced to death. Shepherd and Irvin were later shot, with Lake County Sheriff Willis McCall claiming the two handcuffed men tried to flee while being transported to a new trial that had been ordered by the U.S. Supreme Court due to adverse pretrial publicity. Shepherd died. Irvin survived and told the FBI he was shot in cold blood.

Then-Gov. Leroy Collins commuted Irvin’s sentence to life in prison. Irvin was paroled in 1968 and died a year later. Greenlee, released from prison in the early 1960s, died in 2012.

Carol Greenlee, daughter of Greenlee, said “a burden has been lifted.”

“It’s like waking up out of a nightmare, out of a terrible dream,” Carol Greenlee said. “This is a true vindication of my father.”

Greenlee’s son Charles Greenlee cried as he said after the hearing that “justice has been served.”

“My father was 16. He was beaten. He was put in prison for a crime he never committed,” Charles Greenlee said. “His only crime was to be black in the state of Florida.”

Charles Greenlee said something may have happened to Norma Padgett Upshaw on July 16, 1949, but his father wasn’t involved.

Padgett Upshaw, surrounded by her sons and other family members, rejected the accusatory comments by a relative of Shepherd’s during the hearing that she was “a liar”

“You all just don’t know what kind of horror I’ve been through for all these many years,” Padgett Upshaw said. “I know she called me a liar, but I’m not no liar. If I had to go to court today, I could tell the same story that I told than.”

She also remained firm that the four men were the ones involved.

“I’m begging you not to give them pardons because they done it,” Padgett Upshaw said. “If you do, you’re going to be just like them.”

DeSantis took office Tuesday, replacing former Gov. Rick Scott, who did not take action after an April 2017 legislative resolution requesting the state clear the men.

DeSantis, an attorney, said the pardon was more about the actions of Lake County officials and the state criminal justice system.

“You’d like to think that in America no matter what passions or prejudices may be on the outside of a courtroom, that when you actually get in that courtroom that it’s the law applied to the facts without passions or prejudices that will decide your fate,” DeSantis said. “And I don’t know that there is any way you could look at this case and think that those ideals of justice were satisfied. Indeed, they were perverted time and time again.”

DeSantis also praised current Lake County officials who urged the pardon.

“I think it says a lot about them that they’re willing to look back at this and acknowledge that this was not right,” DeSantis said.

Lake County Property Appraiser Carey Baker, a former state lawmaker, said the four men couldn’t get “true justice” because the process at the time “was so egregiously flawed” and the “actions of local law enforcement so terrible.”

Lake County Commission Chairwoman Leslie Campione said due process was denied for the four men because of the “brutality” of McCall and other local officials.

“History reflects the facts of abuse of power by our Lake County officials at the time,” Campione said. “By taking this action today, we’re able to acknowledge the rights that are guaranteed to us by the U.S. Constitution — at that point in history — they were denied.”

Eagles vs. Saints odds, line: 2019 NFL divisional round picks, playoff predictions from proven computer model on 16-6 run

After an impressive season that resulted in home-field advantage throughout the NFL Playoffs, the New Orleans Saints will begin their postseason on Sunday in the Divisional Round. Drew Brees and company should be fresh, too, after many starters rested in Week 17 and then had a first-round bye. They'll need to shake off the rust quickly, however, because they'll be taking on one of the hottest teams in the NFL, the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. These two teams met back in Week 11, with the hosting Saints winning 48-7. But that loss was a wakeup call for the Eagles, who are peaking at the right time. New Orleans is an eight-point favorite this time around, with the total at 51.5 in the latest Eagles vs. Saints odds. Before you make any Eagles vs. Saints picks and NFL Playoff predictions, check out what SportsLine's Projection Model has to say.

SportsLine's proprietary computer model went 176-80 straight up last season and beat more than 95 percent of CBS Sports Office Pool players in 2016 and '17. It also performed better than 98 percent of experts tracked by NFLPickWatch.com during that span. Additionally, it went 48-34 on A-rated picks against the spread last season, and $100 bettors who have followed it the past two seasons are up nearly $4,000.

The model has continued to nail its top-rated picks in 2018-19, entering the divisional round on a blistering 16-6 run. For the season, it is now 30-15 on all top-rated picks, extending its two-year run to a strong 78-49. It also went 170-84 on straight-up NFL picks during the regular season, ranking inside the top 10 on NFLPickWatch.com. Additionally, it hit all four NFL spread picks on Wild Card Weekend. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now, it has crunched the numbers for Eagles vs. Saints (stream live on fuboTV) from every angle. We can tell you it's leaning over, but it has also generated a strong point-spread selection that hits more than 50 percent of the time. The pick is only available at SportsLine.

For Sunday's matchup, the model knows that the 2018 season has been all about balance for the Saints offensively. After years where it felt like Brees had to throw the ball 50 times per game for New Orleans to compete, a backfield featuring Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram has given the veteran quarterback room to breathe. The Saints threw the ball 519 times during the regular season and ran it 471 times, making them one of the most balanced teams in the league.

Defenses respecting the run opened up the field and gave Brees plenty of winnable one-on-one matchups. The end result was an NFL record for completion percentage (74.4) and an impressive 8.2 yards per pass attempt. Philadelphia had just the 30th-ranked pass defense this season and Brees diced up the Eagles last time out, throwing for 363 yards and four touchdowns.

But just because New Orleans can run the ball and play defense doesn't mean it will cover the Eagles vs. Saints spread in the Divisional Round.

With starting quarterback Carson Wentz again sidelined by injury and Nick Folesunder center, the Eagles resembled the team that could do no wrong in last season's playoffs. Foles led a late 60-yard drive against the Bears that resulted in the go-ahead touchdown to Golden Tate on a fourth-and-goal pass. Philadelphia prevailed when Chicago's Cody Parkey hit the upright and crossbar with a tipped field-goal attempt as time expired.

Philly has been red-hot, winning its past four and covering three times during that span. The Eagles pitched a 24-0 shutout against the divisional-rival Redskins and held the Monsters of the Midway to just 15 points.

Who wins Eagles vs. Saints? And which side of the spread hits in more than 50 percent of simulations? Visit SportsLine now to see which side of the spread you need to jump on Sunday, all from the computer model that has returned nearly $4,000 to $100 bettors over the past two seasons.

Saints clear betting favorites vs. Eagles on NFL playoff odds

The New Orleans Saints begin their postseason with a home game against the Philadelphia Eagles as the biggest betting favorites on the weekend NFL odds.

The New Orleans Saints finished the regular season with a record of 13-3 straight up and 10-6 against the spread with the loss in Week 17 coming as starters rested with the No. 1 seed already locked up. The Saints will get back to business with their well-rested starters this Sunday night when they host the Philadelphia Eagles.

New Orleans is the biggest favorite on the board this weekend at -8 on the NFL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The home team owns a 4-1 SU and ATS record in its last five games against Philadelphia including a 48-7 win when they last met in November.

New Orleans Saints

Before shutting things down to rest in Week 17, the Saints had sealed home field throughout the NFC playoffs with a 13-2 SU and 10-5 ATS record.

New Orleans averaged 32.7 points per game through its first 15 games, and from Week 10 to Week 16 the defense allowed only 17 points per game. The Saints have no obvious weaknesses heading into this divisional round matchup and will have the home crowd behind them in it as well.

Philadelphia Eagles

Another chapter was added to the Nick Foles legend last Sunday as the Chicago Bears missed a field goal in the waning moments of the game to give Philadelphia a 16-15 upset win as 6.5-point underdogs.

Foles has now led the Eagles to a 4-0 SU and 3-0-1 ATS record since taking over as starter for the injured Carson Wentz this season and is 4-0 SU and ATS with four outright upsets in his last four postseason starts. Philadelphia’s defense has allowed only 7.5 points per game over its last two games.

Sunday night’s total is set at 51.5 points at sports betting sites. The OVER is 9-0 in New Orleans’ last nine playoff home games.

By all accounts, the Saints were the best team of the regular season in 2018. There is no question that the Eagles are playing their best football at the right time of the year and another 41-point blowout probably isn’t going to happen. But overcoming New Orleans might just be asking too much of the defending champions.

What do you think?

Written by top40

If anyone is interested I am Top40 online. In the real world my name is David Russell Ellenberger. I am a SWM 57 and live in Louisville, Ky. I started Internettop40.com about 4 years ago. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted the website to be about but I liked the idea of people voting on items in ranked lists. The voting on these ranked lists will move the items up or down in the rankings you vote by clicking the + or - buttons below or next to the item in a list, refresh the page and the item will then appear in it's new ranking. IMHO voting really is one of the most important things you can do. Your vote is literally worth millions of dollars and that's one thing the politicians want you to do but don't want you to think about in that way. In other words vote for me I'm the best and I'm for this I'm for that I am for all the things that you want and that's why should vote for me. In reality what its about is control over you and money. So next time you vote you should demand to get paid. But I digress that's voting on items is just one of the reasons I started Internttop40.com. I also wanted to get my point out to the people and hopefully other people will want to use my website to get their point out or at least create their own lists. I had hoped for this to be another social media website. That hasn't really happened and I have been online for almost 5 years now. More about that later.

Everyone thinks just put your website up and they will come but that's not really the case. Part of the problem is search engines like Google have almost complete control of the web and all the traffic on it and they want you to pay. They also don't like other social media sites or search engine type sites they are what's known in the business as viral sites or sites that mostly contain links and not much original content which is exactly what Google is. But I maintain that links are part of the branding and the way you show your links to the world is an original aspect of any website and part of the branding and is orginal content in and of itself. But Google doesn't think so, Because that's what they are and they of course want complete control and they have it and no one seems to care. I didn't care until I started this website. But again I digress.

Back to the point. Why I started this website. Well another reason was to make money you can sell things or you can put advertising on your website. You can go out and sell advertising yourself or simply sign up for advertising services that have already sold the advertising and put the ads on your website for you. Services like this from Google and it's advertising service called adsense.
