#2 Golden Globe Award Highlights from The 75th Golden Globe Awards

Golden Globes

On Jan 7th The 75th Golden Globe Awards took over the International Ballroom at the Beverly Hilton for a night of memorable and historical moments. It started with host Seth Meyers giving an opening...

The 2019 Golden Globes nominations are out. Let’s run down some surprises first, because there were some rather huge ones.

NBC’s fan favorite The Good Place was finally honored for best comedy series. Sacha Baron Cohen unexpectedly crashed the best actor in a comedy category for Showtime’s political prank series Who Is America? The excellent imported BBC/Netflix thriller Bodyguard got a best drama series nod. And Candice Bergen was nominated for CBS’ (presumed canceled) Murphy Brownreboot. With the exception of the Good Place honor, top oddsmakers did not see those coming.

We’ll have more of surprises along the way. Here are the biggest snubs in the TV categories:

The Handmaids Tale (Hulu). The dystopian drama swept the Emmys for its debut season in 2017 and won for best drama series at the Globes last year. Yet season 2 failed to get a nomination in the top category, and the title was on every prediction list (stars Elisabeth Moss and Yvonne Strahovski were both nominated). It’s a pretty shocking omission, though the season was admittedly more divisive among critics and fans than the first.

Atlanta (FX): The second season of the innovative rap scene comedy, despite being an Emmy favorite, was surprisingly shut out of the comedy series category (though star Donald Glover was nominated). Also snubbed was another Emmy darling, the ’80s wrestling dramedy GLOW (Netflix) (though actress Alison Briewas nominated). But there was an upside: The Good Place (NBC) finally broke into this category with its first Globes comedy series nomination, and star Kristen Bell was nominated for lead actress in a comedy too.

Maniac (Netflix): Many thought the psychological dark comedy-drama was brilliant and unlike anything else on TV this year, so it was expected to get a nom in the movie-limited series category — yet it was squeezed out (star Emma Stonewas also snubbed for Maniac but did receive a supporting nod for her work in the movie The Favourite).

Patrick Melrose (HBO) likewise was skipped in the series limited series category, though that’s more understandable given the project’s somewhat lackluster reaction — all the praise was around the performance of star Benedict Cumberbatch, who was of course nominated.

Ted Danson. While The Good Place received nominations for best comedy series and an actress nod for Kristen Bell, Danson, who was considered the most likely nom of the three, was left out. Blame Sacha Baron Cohen?

#3 St. Nicholas Day – Home

St. Nicholas Day

St. Nicholas Day updated their cover photo.

What did St. Nick bring you?

For those who celebrate, St. Nick stops by overnight and leaves small presents in shoes or stockings.

What did St. Nick leave at your house? Chime In with a photo or video:

So who was St. Nicholas? He was a bishop of Myra, in present-day Turkey, in the fourth century.

Many legends have been attributed to St. Nicholas. Among the most famous is his leaving three dowries for a poor man's daughters, allowing them to marry and avoid being sold into slavery.

In the Roman Catholic Church, Nicholas is the patron saint of mariners, merchants, bakers, travelers and children, among others.

Who was Saint Nicholas, when did he die and how’s St Nicholas Day celebrated?

His generosity was legendary and gave rise to the modern Santa Claus

ST NICHOLAS Day is a time when many people give presents to their loved ones and share tales of how his generosity inspired Santa Claus.

As the day comes around again, here's what you need to know about the saint and how he gave up his wealth to help the poor.

When is St Nicholas Day 2018?

In the Orthodox Church, the day is celebrated on December 19 instead.

Who was St Nicholas?

Saint Nicholas was a fourth century Greek bishop of Mira, which is now part of Turkey.

He was born to wealthy parents, but became an orphan at a young age when his parents died in an epidemic.

The devout Christian dedicated his life to helping the poor and needy, and even spent his inheritance on the cause.

Legend has it that kindly Nicholas came across a poor man who couldn't afford a dowry for his daughters.

Without this payment to their would-be husbands, the daughters wouldn't be able to get married - and would probably end up as prostitutes.

So humble Nicholas anonymously flung three sacks of money through the window into the family home overnight, saving the father the humiliation of asking for charity in public.

Because of the miracles attributed to him, he is sometimes known as Nicholas the Wonderworker.

Living in what is now Turkey, Saint Nick became a legend for his anonymous gift giving and reported miracles

He was particularly known for his secret gift giving and gained a reputation for leaving coins in people’s shoes.

However, early illustrations of St Nick depict him as a stern, commanding man holding a birch rod.

He passed away on December 6, 343AD, and was made a saint after his death as a result of his charitable actions.

Saint Nicholas's kindness became the stuff of legend over the centuries and he was popularised as Father Christmas, who gives presents to children.

The Dutch took their version "Sinterklaas" when they settled in America, where he became the Santa Claus many know today.

The day is popular with many kids in parts of Europe, who receive presents on this day.

Some European cities host special parades or celebrations, in honour of the patron saint.

One of the traditions of the day is kids putting shoes or boots by their fireplace or front door in the days leading up to December 6.

They will then hope to wake to find them filled with small presents on the day.
