#9 HiFiMan HE-400S headphone

About  $299.00

The HiFiMan HE-400S home/studio-style headphones have a open-air over-ear design. These headphones have a detachable 56-inch long audio cord with a stereo mini-plug. The HE-400S comes with a mini-plug-to-1/4-inch-plug adapter and is covered by a 12-month warranty.

Detailed Test Results

Design and features:The headphones have low sensitivity; so while they can provide satisfying volume levels when used with home audio equipment and higher powered portable audio devices, they may not be a good match for lower-powered portables. This model comes with a detachable 56-inch audio cable and a mini-plug-to-1/4-inch-plug adapter.

Sound quality: We found the HE-400S delivers sound quality sound quality that falls in the excellent range; while no headphone is perfect, the sonic shortcomings of this model are minor. The overall sound can best be summarized as bit full and nicely detailed. Bass (as in bass drums, bass guitars, stand-up bass, etc.) has good impact and definition and goes deep, but seems slightly sluggish. The midrange (voices, guitars, horns, etc.) is generally nicely balanced, full-bodied, and highly detailed, but very slightly etched - a bit more sharply outlined then it should be. The treble (cymbals, the upper range of violins, etc.) is extended but very slightly subdued. The sound has a good sense of liveliness and is open -- sound-wise it seems like you don't have anything covering your ears. The HE-400s has a sound that is similar to the HE-400i that is also covered in the Ratings, but HE-400s is not quite as smooth throughout the midrange and the tonal balance is a little more neutral (neither full nor lean) overall than the HE-400i.

Comfort: We found that these headphones produce a sense of moderate pressure around the ears. The ear pads might feel hot after prolonged use.

#10 Bowers & Wilkins P7 headphone

About  $399.00

The Bowers & Wilkins P7 home/studio-style headphones have a closed, over-ear design. These headphones are intended for use with iPods, iPads, some other cell phones, as well as standard audio devices. Features include earcups that can fold for travel or storage. The P7 comes with a carrying pouch, a detachable 51-inch long audio cable with built-in mic and answer/player control button for iPhone/iPod/iPad and smartphone use, a detachable 51-inch standard audio cable, and a mini-plug-to-1/4-inch-plug adapter. It is covered by a 24-month warranty.

Detailed Test Results

Design and features:Although this home/studio-style over-ear model lacks active noise reduction, the closed design helps to reduce both outside noise and sound leaking out into your environment. The headphones have medium sensitivity, so they can provide satisfying volume levels when used with all but the lowest-powered portable audio devices. Features include a carrying pouch, a detachable 51-inch long audio cable with built-in mic and answer/player control button for iPhone/iPod/iPad and smartphone use, a detachable 51-inch standard audio cable, and a mini-plug-to-1/4-inch-plug adapter. This model has earcups that can fold for travel and storage.

Sound quality: The P7 delivers excellent, if somewhat constricted, overall sound, with a neutral character. Although the bass is a bit lean sounding, it has good impact and goes fairly deep. Midrange is clean and fairly detailed, but lacks a bit of body and warmth and sounds very slightly nasal. There is a bit of mid-treble sizzle, and the upper treble is somewhat rolled off. Overall this model is somewhat open sounding with good dynamics, though upper treble air is lacking.

Comfort: We found these headphones can produce a sense of medium pressure around the ears, and the earpads may feel hot and/or sticky after prolonged use.

#11 Grado Prestige SR80e headphone

About  $99.00

The Grado Prestige SR80e home/studio-style headphones have an open-air on-ear design. These headphones have a 80-inch audio cord with a stereo mini-plug. The Prestige SR80e has earcups that swivel, comes with a mini-plug-to-1/4-inch-plug adapter, and is covered by a 12-month warranty.

Detailed Test Results

Design and features:This home/studio-style on-ear model has an open-air design that doesn't muffle outside sounds, so you'll be able to hear external sounds, such as a doorbell or car horn, when you are wearing the headphones. The headphones have medium-high sensitivity so they can provide satisfying volume levels even when used with lower-powered portable audio devices. This model has earcups that swivel for storage or single ear monitoring, and it comes with a mini-plug-to-1/4-inch-plug adapter.

Sound quality: The Prestige SR80e delivers excellent overall sound, with a neutral character. Bass has good impact and goes fairly deep, but is slightly prominent and a bit boomy. Midrange is detailed and fairly even, but sounds a bit clinical and the bass somewhat crowds the lower midrange. Treble is extended and detailed, but is slightly recessed. The overall sound is somewhat open, with good dynamics. Compared to the Prestige SR80i that it replaces, the SR60e's sound is very similar but sounds a bit cleaner.

Comfort: We found that these headphones produce a sense of moderate pressure on the ears. The earpads might feel hot after prolonged use.

Sound quality: The PM-3 delivers excellent sound quality, and It would be a good choice for the listener who won't be satisfied with anything less than top-notch music and movie soundtrack playback. The sound is best described as neutral (neither full nor lean) and pretty clean. While no headphone is perfect, the shortcomings of this model are minor. Bass (the tonal region that more or less covers bass drums, bass guitars, stand-up bass, etc.) has good impact and goes deep, but lacks a bit of detail. Midrange (the tonal range that more or less covers voices, guitars, horns, etc.) is fairly even and you can hear all but the finest detail, but there is a hint of haziness. Treble (the tonal range that covers cymbals, the upper range of violins, etc.) is slightly subdued compared to the rest of the tonal range, and the highest treble is a bit muted. The overall sound has a good sense of liveliness and is somewhat open (sound-wise it almost seems like you don't have anything covering your ears).

Comfort: We found that these headphones produce a sense of moderate pressure around the ears. The ear pads might feel hot and/or sticky after prolonged use.
