#27 Cheshire GP ‘lucky to be alive’ after husband attacks her

A doctor said she was lucky to escape with her life after her husband launched a brutal drunken attack on her.

Becky Dougherty, a GP in Widnes, Cheshire had fallen asleep on the sofa watching television when Gareth Dougherty, 45, came home and savagely beat her.

The 47-year-old screamed 'he's going to kill me' to police down the phone as he chased her round their bungalow in Widnes at around 11.30pm on May 6.

Dougherty, who is a managing director of a Cheshire Machinery Limited, only ended his savage assault once he heard police sirens rushing to the scene.   

Mr Dougherty pleaded guilty to assault at Chester Crown Court on Friday, but avoided jail as he was sentenced to eight months suspended for two years.

#28 Pakistan election in disarray as incumbent rejects result

Pakistan’s general election has been plunged into chaos after the incumbent Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) said it would reject the result amid widespread allegations that the military was rigging the ballot in favour of the party led by the former cricketer Imran Khan.

With only a third of the vote counted by 3am – an hour after the result was officially due – Khan’s Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led in 110 seats, with the PMLN trailing on 68.

Results continued to trickle in slowly on Thursday, hours after Khan’s supporters took to the streets to celebrate victory.

Most projections held that the PTI would go on to win between 107 and 120 seats out of a total 272 in the lower-house, exceeding expectations and delivering the role of prime minister to Khan for the first time.
