#1 Mississippi’s racial history haunts Hyde-Smith, Espy battle for Senate

JACKSON, Miss. — Racial tension permeates the air in this state like humidity — thick and stifling at certain times, less noticeable at others, but always present.

Right now, it hangs heavily over Tuesday's special election runoff for the remaining two years of retired Sen. Thad Cochran's term, a contest that pits white Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith against Democrat Mike Espy, a black former congressman and U.S. agriculture secretary.

Hyde-Smith ensured that racial issues would be a consideration when she was captured on video earlier this month saying that she would be "on the front row" if one of her white supporters was condemned to a "public hanging."

Since then, Hyde-Smith has insisted there was no "negative connotation" to what she said, offered a qualified apology at a debate, and watched as video of her encouraging voter suppression, a photo of her in a Confederate cap and a news story about her attendance, and that of her daughter, at private white "segregation academies" have made the rounds in the state.

In the Nov. 20 debate, Hyde-Smith said her words had been "twisted" and "used as a political weapon against me." To anyone offended, she said, "I certainly apologize." Her remark about suppressing “liberal folks” was just a joke, according to her campaign.

#2 Photographer reveals story behind iconic image of fleeing migrants

TIJUANA, Mexico — It’s the image from the unfolding crisis in Tijuana seen around the world: a migrant mom and her young children running away from a smoking tear gas canister with barbed wire and a forbidding metal wall in the background.

Both children are barefoot, clad only in T-shirts, and one appears to be wearing a pull-up diaper.

The woman clutching their arms and dragging them out of harm's way is wearing black leggings and a T-shirt emblazoned with the smiling cartoon faces of the Anna and Elsa from the Disney movie "Frozen."

That jarring portrait was captured on camera Sunday by veteran Reuters photographer Kim Kyung-Hoon moments after a group of Central American migrants approached the border crossing into San Diego and were forced backwards by tear gas canisters hurled by U.S. border agents.

"When the tear gas started, some people were screaming and everybody started running away,” Kim told NBC News on Monday. "I saw the woman and two children running away. One girl was barefoot from the beginning. The other was wearing beach sandals and lost them in the chaos."

#4 Trump Rips Robert Mueller As ‘Prosecutor Gone Rogue’ After Paul Manafort Complaint

© AFP Contributor, AFP
Robert Mueller has accused Paul Manafort, who agreed to a plea deal, of repeatedly lying.

President Donald Trump lobbed fresh insults at special counsel Robert Mueller on Tuesday, a day after Mueller’s office filed a complaint alleging former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort broke his plea deal with repeated lies.

Trump called Mueller the opposite of a saint who is doing “TREMENDOUS” damage to the country’s criminal justice system by probing Russian interference in the 2016 election.

....The Fake News Media builds Bob Mueller up as a Saint, when in actuality he is the exact opposite. He is doing TREMENDOUS damage to our Criminal Justice System, where he is only looking at one side and not the other. Heroes will come of this, and it won’t be Mueller and his ...

Manafort reached a deal with Mueller’s team in September in which he agreed to plead guilty to a range of crimes and cooperate with the investigation in exchange for a lighter punishment. Mueller now says Manafort has been lying to prosecutors, so the deal is off.

Trump, in a series of tweets, raged against Mueller’s “now $30,000,000 Witch Hunt” and “ruined lives,” but didn’t specifically mention Manafort.
