Anderson Cooper’s eyeroll while Kellyanne Conway spun was plain “sexism,” the counselor to the President charged Thursday.
Conway painted a parallel between herself and Hillary Clinton two days after the CNN anchor spawned a viral GIF while grilling her on now-former FBI Director James Comey.
“Let me tell you something: Hillary Clinton is in search of sexism as a lame excuse for why her disastrous candidacy and campaign lost six months ago,” Conway told “Fox and Friends.” “I face sexism a lot of times when I show up for interviews like that.
“Could you imagine rolling your eyes, having a male anchor on a network roll eyes at Hillary Clinton ... a female representative/spokesperson for President Obama or President Bill Clinton?”
The top White House aide had appeared on CNN Tuesday night to explain Comey’s sudden axing, with Cooper rolling tape of then-candidate Trump praising the FBI head for his handling of the Clinton email probe.
“You’re conflating two things that don’t belong together. Thanks for the trip down memory lane,” Conway said. “I was on your show often last fall, saying we were going to win Michigan, and how we were going to do it. So that was fun.”
Cue Cooper’s almost cartoonish eyeroll — which proved cathartic for liberal Twitter, but read misogynistic to conservative outlets like Fox News and Townhall.
Conway, meanwhile, gave Fox her own account of the lead-up: “The fact is, they showed all these clips and it showed candidate trump in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and I said, ‘Hey, thanks for the trip down memory lane,’ and talked about winning Michigan,” she said. “And then he rolled his eyes.”
Exasperated eyerolls are nothing new on “AC 360.” A 2014 clip shows Cooper rolling his eyes after a long transition from a field reporter, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) in January rolled her eyes after Cooper said there was “no evidence” White House chief strategist Steve Bannon was a white supremacist.
Conway’s Fox News interview on Thursday marked at least the second time a member of Team Trump has accused a CNN personality of sexism.
Following Conway's fiery February exchange with Jake Tapper over “fake news” and the imaginary Bowling Green Massacre, White House counterterrorism adviser Sebastian Gorka called the host’s demeanor “aggressive.”
“The tone was very disappointing,” the controversial aide told The Hill. “It was trying to treat a woman as a punching bag, really. It was clear.”
wrote earlier Wednesday that the White House's explanations for firing James Comey were crumbling. Well, President Trump just exploded them.
In one fell swoop, Trump totally contradicted his three top spokespeople and offered a polar-opposite version of events than they have this week.
After they had spent the past 45 hours emphasizing that this was a decision Trump arrived at after receiving a memo and recommendation from Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, Trump just blurted out that he was going to fire Comey all along. Basically, he admitted the memo was a ruse and a political ploy.
Here's what Trump told NBC News's Lester Holt (emphasis mine):
